A Beginner’s Guide to Budget Travel - 06 Tips and Tricks to Save

Updated: Aug 25

Budget Traveling Tips

Scrolling through Instagram, it’s easy to feel a twinge of envy seeing dreamy sunsets, remote beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Each photo and video seems to whisper tales of exotic adventures, spontaneous road trips, and carefree beach days. It's natural to wonder why your bank account seems to keep you from enjoying such adventures, leaving you stuck in your daily grind while others explore the world.

It's not just social media that fuels this wanderlust; travel blogs, YouTube vlogs, and even conversations with friends can ignite a desire to pack your bags and set off on your own adventure. Yet, the looming concern of high travel costs often dampens these dreams. The price of flights, accommodations, meals, and activities can seem overwhelming, especially if you're trying to stick to a budget.

But here's the good news: don't let the fear of expenses stop you from experiencing incredible journeys. Traveling on a budget is entirely possible with a little planning and some smart tips. Here's how you can make it happen.

Spontaneous trips are fun if you have plenty of time and money. But if you're on a budget, planning is essential. You don’t need a detailed, hour-by-hour itinerary, but knowing how long you'll spend in each place and the general route of your trip can save you a lot of money. Last-minute flights and accommodations are often much more expensive, so plan ahead to avoid those extra costs.

When I plan my trips, I start by making a rough outline of my travel dates and destinations. This helps me to estimate my budget for flights, accommodations, and daily expenses. By planning my route, I can also take advantage of cheaper travel options like buses and trains instead of pricey last-minute flights. Additionally, having a plan helps me avoid peak travel times and find hidden gems off the beaten path, saving both money and enriching my travel experience.

One - Score Flights Deals

Booking flights well in advance is one of the simplest ways to save on travel costs. For domestic flights, aim to book two to three months ahead, and for international flights, try to book three to six months in advance. This allows you to snag lower fares before they start to rise closer to your departure date.

I’ve found that traveling on a Tuesday or Wednesday can also make a significant difference in the cost of flights. Weekends tend to be more expensive due to higher demand, so midweek travel can save you quite a bit. Using Google Flights’ price tracker has been a game-changer for me. I set up alerts for my desired routes, and the system notifies me when prices drop, allowing me to book at the best possible time.

Skyscanner is another tool I rely on. It includes budget airlines that major search engines often overlook. This is especially helpful when traveling to new regions where I might not be familiar with the local budget carriers. Skyscanner’s "everywhere" option is fantastic for spontaneous trips or when I just want to find the cheapest destination available.

Two - Travel During Shoulder Season

Traveling during the shoulder season, which is the period between peak and off-peak seasons, can lead to significant savings. During these times, airlines and hotels lower their prices to attract more customers, as there’s less demand. The weather is usually still pleasant, but the crowds are smaller, making for a more enjoyable experience.

Using apps like Hopper has been incredibly helpful for planning trips during the shoulder season. Hopper color-codes its calendar to show which dates have the lowest prices, making it easy to choose the most cost-effective travel dates. You can also set up alerts for specific routes, and Hopper will notify you when the prices drop. This feature has helped me find affordable flights even to popular destinations during less busy times.

Three - Pack Light, Travel Smart

Minimizing luggage is a key strategy for saving money on travel. Many airlines charge hefty fees for checked baggage, so packing light can help you avoid these extra costs. I’ve learned to travel with just a carry-on, even for extended trips. It’s all about packing efficiently and only bringing what you truly need.

Investing in luggage organizers has been a game-changer for me. These handy bags help maximize space and keep my belongings organized, making it easier to fit everything into a carry-on. By avoiding checked baggage fees, I save money and also reduce the risk of lost luggage. Plus, traveling with less stuff makes it easier to move around and enjoy my trip without being weighed down by heavy bags.

Four - Think Outside the Box

When it comes to finding a place to stay, thinking outside the traditional hotel box can lead to significant savings. Hostels, rental properties like Airbnb, and even house-sitting can be much cheaper alternatives. These options often provide unique and authentic experiences that you might miss out on with a standard hotel stay.

I always look for accommodations with a kitchen, as this allows me to save money by cooking some of my meals. Shopping at local markets for groceries not only reduces my food expenses but also gives me a chance to experience the local culture. Cooking my own meals, even just breakfast or lunch, can add up to substantial savings over the course of a trip.

Airbnb has been a reliable option for me. It offers a wide range of accommodations, from private rooms to entire homes, often at lower prices than hotels. Additionally, Airbnb now offers experiences, which are activities hosted by locals. These can be a fun and affordable way to explore a new place and meet new people.

Five - Dodge Foreign Transaction Fees

Using credit and debit cards with foreign transaction fees can quickly add up. Before you travel, consider getting a travel rewards credit card that doesn’t charge these fees. This simple step can save you a lot over the course of your trip.

Before I set off on any international trip, I make sure my financial tools are in order. I have a travel rewards credit card that charges zero foreign transaction fees, which has saved me a significant amount of money over the years. It’s also worth checking if your bank offers any partnerships with international banks to reduce ATM withdrawal fees. These small steps can make a big difference in your travel budget.

Six - Enjoy Free Activities and Attractions

Many destinations offer plenty of free activities and attractions. Parks, museums with free admission days, public beaches, hiking trails, and cultural festivals can provide memorable experiences without costing a dime. Research these opportunities before your trip to fill your itinerary with fun, budget-friendly activities.

Exploring a new city doesn’t have to be expensive. Use online resources to conduct your own free tours or join free walking tours offered in many major cities. Apps like Spotted by Locals and TripAdvisor provide detailed information and tips for exploring large cities on a budget.

Traveling on a budget doesn't mean sacrificing quality or missing out on meaningful experiences. With a bit of planning and smart choices, you can enjoy amazing adventures without breaking the bank. So, pack your bags, plan your route, and get ready to explore the world on a budget!

Love,

Rae
