Oats are a nutritious and versatile breakfast option that can provide a range of health benefits, including improved digestion, heart health, and weight management. However, the taste and texture of plain oats can be a bit uninspiring, leaving you feeling unsatisfied and unfulfilled.

But don't give up on oats just yet!

There are several easy tips and tricks to make oats taste delicious and satisfying. Whether you prefer sweet or savory oats, there is a recipe out there that is sure to please your taste buds.

Let's start from the basics -

Common Reasons Why Most Of Us Dislike Oats

For me, the biggest reason why I couldn't stand oats was the mushy texture. I just never liked the slimy and gooey texture and found it to be extremely unappetizing. It just reminded me of paper mache. Oats also have a slightly nutty flavor which may not be appealing to everyone. Some people may even find it to be bland and flavorless.

Another reason is that oats can be quite filling and may cause feelings of bloating or discomfort, especially if consumed in large quantities or on an empty stomach. This can be particularly true if you have a sensitive digestive system.

How To Cook Oats - The Correct Way

The first step towards beginning to like oats is to learn how to cook them the right way. My biggest concern was the texture.

On the days when I used instant oats, I would soak them in warm water instead of cooking them in boiling hot water. This would help retain the chewy texture instead of turning it into a sloppy mess.

Additionally, if you have only tried one type of oats, such as instant oats or rolled oats, and did not enjoy them, it is possible that you may like another variety, such as steel-cut oats or oat groats, which have a different texture and taste.

Opt for steel-cut oats if you prefer a chewier texture, or select rolled oats if you prefer a creamier texture.

Instructions - For Stove Top

For one serving you will need 1/2 a cup of old-fashioned oats and 1 cup of water.

  • Add your water to a saucepan and let it come up to a boil

  • Add the old-fashioned oats to this and let it simmer for 5 minutes on low heat

  • Make sure the oats aren't dried out and there is still a little water left

You can also cook your oats with milk instead of water for a more nutritious, high-calorie, and creamy bowl of oats.

Instructions - For Microwave

For one serving you will need 1/2 a cup of old-fashioned oats and 3/4 cup of water

  • Boil or heat the water for 50 seconds

  • Add this hot water to your oats and let them soak till the water is absorbed

If you want your oats to be cooked and have a softer consistency - you can add the water directly to the oats and cook them together in the microwave for around 2 minutes.

Place a paper towel over the cup to prevent the oats from drying out.

Instructions - Overnight Oats

If you are short on time in the morning, you can also prepare overnight oats the night before.

For one serving you will need 1/2 a cup of old-fashioned oats and 3/4 cup of water

  • Add your oats along with the desired base of water, milk, or yogurt. Shake or mix it all together.

  • Add your desired toppings or sweeteners

  • Let your oats soak in the fridge overnight. By the time you wake up in the morning, your oats will be ready to eat

Tips for a Healthy and Delicious Bowl of Oatmeal

One - Adding your favorite toppings & sweeteners

The easiest way to add flavor to your oats is to experiment with different toppings and mix-ins. For a sweet and fruity flavor, try adding sliced bananas, berries, or diced apples to your oats.

If you need some extra sweetness you can also mix in a spoonful of honey, agave, or maple syrup.

You can also add a pinch of cinnamon, vanilla extract, or cocoa powder to your oats while cooking to give them a warm and comforting flavor.

If you prefer a savory flavor, try mixing in some diced vegetables, such as bell peppers, mushrooms, or spinach, and top with grated cheese or a fried egg.

Two - Adding a different base - Water, Milk, or Yogurt

Another way to add flavor to your oats is to cook them with different liquids. Instead of using plain water, try cooking your oats in milk or a milk substitute, such as almond or coconut milk. This will give your oats a creamy and rich flavor that is both delicious and satisfying.

Three - Adding creamy & indulgent nut butters

Adding nut butters, such as peanut butter, almond butter, or cashew butter, is another great way to add flavor and texture to your oats. Nut butters can be added directly to your oats while cooking, giving them a rich and creamy texture that is both delicious and satisfying. The natural oils in nut butters provide healthy fats and protein, which can help keep you feeling full and energized throughout the day.

Another way to incorporate nut butter into your oats is to add it as a topping. Once your oats are cooked, simply add a dollop of nut butter on top and stir until it is fully melted and mixed in.

Four - Adding a variety of textures - Granola, Chia & Nuts

Adding granola or nuts to your oats can not only add flavor but also improve the texture of your breakfast. Granola is a crunchy and flavorful addition that can be added on top of your oats, adding texture and sweetness to your breakfast.

Adding chia seeds to your oats is another way to boost their nutritional value and add a fun and interesting texture. Chia seeds are rich in fiber, protein, and omega-3 fatty acids, making them a healthy addition to your breakfast. When mixed with liquid, chia seeds form a gel-like texture that can help thicken your oats and give them a satisfying crunch.

Nuts, on the other hand, can be added directly to your oats while cooking, giving them a nutty and crunchy texture that complements the soft and creamy oats.

Five - Adding a touch of spice

Adding spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger is another way to make your oats more flavorful and interesting. These spices add warmth and depth to your oats, making them more satisfying and delicious.

Oats don't have to be bland and boring.

With a little creativity and experimentation, you can turn this superfood into a delicious and satisfying breakfast that you'll look forward to eating every day. Whether you prefer sweet or savory oats, there are plenty of easy tips and tricks to make them taste great.

Get creative and try out different recipes until you find the perfect flavor combination that works for you!
