Updated: Mar 12, 2023

Learn more about the benefits of Avocado Oil for your hair and DIY recipes to make this oil at home.

Greasy hair? No, thanks.

Is that what you thought when you heard about avocado oil? Me too.

But there's a catch, it is said that adding a little avocado oil to your hair care routine can actually have many benefits. This oil can also be used for all hair types.

It contains a variety of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants that help boost the health of your hair and scalp.

What are the benefits?

  • Helps to rejuvenate and moisturize your scalp

  • It has high levels of vitamins, proteins, monosaturated fatty acids, and amino acids which are all great ingredients to boost the health of your hair.

  • It helps lock in moisture which helps in keeping your hair hydrated because of its occlusive properties

  • The presence of oleic acid and monounsaturated fats in it helps it get absorbed by the scalp. This helps in reaching the roots and nourishing your hair instead of just sitting on the surface and making your hair greasy.

  • It is lighter than most other oils and helps in avoiding oil build-up

  • Avocadoes are also high in Vitamin E which helps protect the hair and repair it as well. It also contains Vitamin D which helps in boosting and maintaining hair growth.

  • It also helps in preventing split ends, dandruff, frizzy hair, and hair fall.

  • Avocado oil can also be used as a leave-in conditioner and a detangler.

How can I make this oil at Home?

Here is a DIY recipe to make natural Avocado Oil at home.

For this, you will first have to cut the ripe avocado and scoop out the flesh of the fruit into a bowl. Blend this into a paste.

Method One

  • Step One | Take the Avocado paste and spread it onto a baking tray and let it dry or dehydrate. You can either leave it out in the sun for 3 days or heat it in the oven.

  • Step Two | Scrap out the black dried avocado and place it on a double boiler. This is basically a setup in which the steam from the water is used to extract the oil from the dried fruit.

  • Step Three | After a while, transfer this into a muslin cloth and squeeze the oil out into a bowl.

Method Two

  • Step One | Pour one cup of Extra Virgin Olive Oil into a saucepan and add the avocado paste to it. Stir occasionally and cook it on medium flame.

  • Step Two | You will begin to see the oil float on the top. The avocado will slowly turn from a bright pale green to a darker green and will finally turn brown. This is when you will know this step is done and you can turn off the heat.

  • Step Three | Let it cool for a while and then pour it into a muslin or cheesecloth and strain it.

How do I use this oil?

Avocado oil works really well for intensive hair treatment masks.

  • One | Hair Mask

Cut and scoop the flesh of a ripe avocado, and mash half in a bowl. To this, add 1 egg yolk and 1 tablespoon of honey. You can also use avocado oil for this.

Mix all of it together and apply it to wet hair and leave it on for around 20 minutes before washing it off.

  • Two | Hot Oil Treatment

Use equal parts of Avocado oil and Coconut or Argan Oil. Add a few drops of essential oils like lavender, tea tree, or rosemary to this.

Put the oils in a jar and dip them in hot water or heat it in a double boiler. Once it is warm. massage it into your hair and leave it on for at least 30 minutes and then wash it off.

  • Three | Leave-in Conditioner

Mix 2 tbsp coconut oil, 4 tbsp aloe vera gel, and 1 tbsp of avocado oil together and use it as a leave-in conditioner on slightly wet hair after washing your hair.

How do I add it to my routine?

  • Step One | Warm Oil

Take a little bit of Avocado oil in a bowl and heat it for 2-3 minutes or until it is warm enough to apply. The quantity of oil needed will depend on the length and thickness of your hair.

Do a dab test on the back of your hand to make sure the oil isn't too hot, or else you might end up scalding your scalp.

  • Step Two | Apply It

Divide your hair into sections to be able to reach the roots easily. Dab the oil using your fingers onto your scalp and massage it in for better absorption. Massaging will also help in improving blood circulation which helps in increasing hair growth and health.

You can also use this oil for the tips of your hair to help with split ends and dryness.

  • Step Three | Wash

Let this oil stay in your hair for at least 30 minutes or for as long as possible to allow it to soak. After this, use some lukewarm water and continue with your regular hair-wash routine.

Make sure you wash the oil off properly to avoid greasy or flat hair.

There you go, healthy and nourished hair with avocado Oil

Love,

Rae
