The power of manifestation and optimistic thinking is nothing new.

In fact, it dates back to the early 1800s and finds its roots in the field of psychology. It is based on the popular concept of the Law of Attraction, which claims energy from our thoughts often helps in attracting and defining our experiences in life.

This mindset was brought into the limelight by Laura Galebe, a 22-year-old content creator who posted a TikTok on the power of positive thinking and captioned it - “Let’s talk about the lucky girl syndrome.

Since then, multiple content pieces have been shared by multiple creators regarding this topic and the tag #LuckyGirlSyndome has received over 360 million views on TikTok”

Lucky Girl Syndrome - Explained

The concept of the lucky girl syndrome is merely based on having a naturally optimistic outlook on life that attracts positive opportunities and experiences.

It also subconsciously forces one to have a more resilient mindset, allowing them to deal with setbacks and embrace challenges with confidence.

The role of mindset in shaping luck is significant and often overlooked but in reality, it does have a small but significant impact on how we perceive things. A positive mindset can attract positive opportunities and experiences, while a negative mindset can limit our potential and create roadblocks to success.

The Science Behind It

Positive thinking is often associated with the release of feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin, which can improve our overall mood and well-being.

Studies have also shown that positive affirmations activate the brain's reward centers which in turn makes it more likely for the actions to be repeated in the future because our brain considers it to be a positive reinforcement. On the other hand, negative thoughts activate the brain's stress response, which leads to anxiety and affects performance.

The use of positive affirmation has been used in multiple cognitive behavioral therapy models.

How Can I Practice Positive Thinking?

There are numerous benefits of positive thinking. It helps us cultivate resilience, improves decision-making, creates healthy relationships, and it also enhances our physical and mental well-being.

Harnessing the power of positive thinking requires intentional effort and practice.

Here are a few ways in which you can practice and welcome the lucky girl syndrome into your life :

  1. Visualize your goals and aspirations by creating lists, prompts, or even mood boards

  2. Practices gratitude and be thankful

  3. Practice self-reflection in the form of self-talk, meditation, or journaling

  4. Surround yourself with positivity and cut out noise from negative influences

  5. Focusing on personal growth without comparison

  6. Celebrate your achievements - however big or small they might be

Overcoming its Limiting Effects

An important facet of the Lucky Girl Syndrome is accepting and embracing imperfections. The false perception of lucky girls having an easy and perfect life can create unrealistic expectations and be counter-productive for those who struggle to attain the same level of success.

Each one has a unique path that they are meant to follow and no two journeys can look alike. There will always be ups and downs in life - the practice of positive thinking only helps us get past those setbacks so that we can get back up and achieve our goals to the best of our abilities.

Another limitation of this trend is that it is often attributed to those who seem to have everything fall into place for them with little to no effort. This often tends to discourage and demotivate those who believe they do not share the same levels of privilege and turns into a blame game filled with a sense of hopelessness and self-doubt.

I too find myself wondering how someone got so lucky without having to work for it, while I on the other hand seem to be doing everything right but am still not able to reach anywhere close to where the ‘lucky girl’ has managed to get without breaking a sweat.

Recognizing these negative patterns and turning them into positive thoughts can help light can help break the cycle of limiting beliefs and open up new opportunities. It all begins with accepting your circumstances and doing the best you can within your means without any comparisons.

Our brain is wired to think and act in a certain manner due to its default setting. It takes time to completely adapt to something new by rewiring our neural pathways and developing muscle memory. Like any other change in life, we have to be patient.

Lucky Girl Syndrome can be seen as both a challenge and an opportunity - it really depends on how you perceive and practice it.

Rae
